After reading and being fairly ambivalent to several of Laymon's works... this one entertained me. Perhaps because there really was no point other than - the world changes at about midnight... the loonies come out and be prepared for the unexpected. Though this book contained some figures we've seen before in either movies or other stories (the crazy bike hag, the van, etc) they come at you with such a randomness that the reader has to wonder if Laymon wasn't a bit high while writing it. ThoughIf you like walking alone at night you never know what is going to happen to you... And October's nights are the creepiest ones.I used working on shifts and sometimes the 3 am night bus simply "vanished" so I had long creepy walks in the cold (often rainy) October nights here in Rome, but luckly nothing happened to me like the ones told in this book.The whole time I was asking to myself where the hell this Laymon's story was going on, but at the end it just seemed to me that he was just

Wow, getting past all the stalkerish business, I really enjoyed this novel! The suspense even as he waited to peer into a strangers window calibrated me and kept me hooked. Laymon has a way with a story always keeps me turning the page and is paced with incredible precision. I felt the world he painted after 11 PM to be spooky and oddly realistic lol, I live in the inner city and this book kept me suspicious of the transients hahahaha. Very good read imo, not his best but far from the worst.
Strange, atmospheric outing for Laymon. This one was, by no means, a barn burner, but it was absorbing and featured a cast of interesting characters whose motives were never quite concrete.Definitely a unique story, and one I would recommend to anyone looking to break into Laymon's work. I would not categorize this one as horror.
3.5 stars rounded up!Richard Laymon does a lot of right here, and he does some wrong. I quite enjoyed the dream-like aspects of the story the sheer mystery of Eds nighttime walks but I did get bogged down a bit by his and Eileens relationship. That whole thing moved a bit too quickly; its the cause of my taking eight days to finish this relatively quick book.Still, this is considered one of Laymons finest, and it is quite different from his titles that Ive read thus far. A very good, well-written story about a young man roaming the streets at night and the bizarre and mysterious outcome.Ed is heartbroken and begins walking late at night...which turns out to be a world of weird.
