Interpretation Concering Books A Time to Love and a Time to Die

After two years at the Russian front, Ernst Graeber finally receives three weeks’ leave. But since leaves have been canceled before, he decides not to write his parents, fearing he would just raise their hopes. Then, when Graeber arrives home, he finds his house bombed to ruin and his parents nowhere in sight. Nobody knows if they are dead or alive. As his leave draws to a close, Graeber reaches out to Elisabeth, a childhood friend. Like him, she is imprisoned in a world she did not create. But in a time of war, love seems a world away. And sometimes, temporary comfort can lead to something unexpected and redeeming.

Upon rereading a couple of chapters I realized I was a bit harsh in my initial assessment. I still think this is not the best introduction to Remarque. But if you've read a some of his novels and like them, you'll eventually get to this one.The story focuses on a German soldier who goes home for a two week vacation from the Russian front in late 1944. I never really found much, if any, sympathy for the two main characters of the book. After reading a biography of Remarque, I was made more aware

A fantastic book! Impossible to put down.

I remember the thing I loved most about this book was discussing it with Dad. He wasn't big on novels, but he thought this one was ok, because it was about a German soldier on leave from the Soviet front. :) One of the best scenes we discussed was the one where the main character is on the train ride away from the front, and all the soldiers are talking about what they are really fighting for. Trying to make sense of the racial purity policies, trying to understand who is an ally and who is

Sad to say, I don't think I've read "All Quiet on the Western Front" yet. I will have to. I believe this was the first novel I have read about the German side of WWII. It starts on the Russian front as the Germans are in retreat, returns to Germany with the protagonist Graeber on furlough, and then returns to Russia to continue the war.Among its striking features is that it does not glamorize war at all. In fact, the nurse in Slaughterhouse Five might have approved it as much or more than

Strong beginning and end but the middle was more of a love story which I don't particularly care for.

The other side of the war - a german soldier vision. The loss of the illusion - the awakening, the discovery of love in the middle of destruction, loss, pain, fear and death.Simply amazing!Hes afraid," Graber said."Yes, naturally. But hes a good dog.""And a man-eater.""Were all that.""Why?""We are. And we think, just like that dog, that we are still good. And just like him we are looking for a bit of warmth and light and friendship.
