Both sides think of the other as a disgrace, although both sides hold more similarities between them than differences. But it became common behavior that when it comes toWell deserved recipient of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction. Since in I live in the gulf region, I probably related to this book more than many people will. I found reading it painful at times as the main protagonist struggles through real identity issues and with people who are often not very kind. I admire the vulnerability of the author.
The first half of the book meanders along telling the back story of José Mendoza born to a Filipino mother who worked as a maid in the house of his Kuwaiti father. Thrown out by the family, Jose bides his time in Manilla waiting for the opportunity to return to Kuwait, be reunited with his father's family and live in the land of plenty.
