Wow! What a slam bang historical romance epic! Taita, slave and eunuch, tells the story of Lostris and her lover Tanus, lady and warrior of ancient Egypt. Lostris is sold into Pharaoh's harem, Egypt is overrun by Hyksos hordes with advanced technology in the form of chariots (with wheels, the first the Egyptians have ever seen) and recurved bows, Pharaoh is killed in battle, and Lostris leads her people south, to the source of the Nile, there to regroup and rebuild and return to reclaim EgyptFor me, there's always a bit of trepidation when I pick up a novel set in Ancient Egypt. If I'm lucky, the book has plenty of research, an engaging story, and few anachronisms. Then there's this heap of steaming dung. There is so much to this one that I detest, from the insufferable perfection of the lovers Lostris and Tanus, the narrator, Taita the Super-Eunuch, and host of pretty much forgettable side characters. I have been to Ancient Egypt, lived, lost and triumphed there, and then resurfaced in my own time as if coming out of a vivid dream. I thought this novel to be just wonderful filled with amazing characters, wonderful history, and a love story that has come down through the ages. Certainly, if you love the lure of ancient Egypt, this book is one that will delight and entertain you through its weighty five hundred plus pages. Definitely a page turner as we are taken through history by the engaging and ever loyal Taita.
Absolutely fascinating book for readers who like stories about Ancient Egypt. A truly compelling story narrated by the multi-talented Taita the slave who has a mystical side and he protects and influences his mistress, a princess through various dangerous adventures, forbidden love, power struggles, epic fights etc .Also there is lots of interesting information within the plot about the great river Nile. One of Wilbur Smith's best books with a sequel too.

I didn't give this book even a part of a star because I think that if you dislike a book so much that you can't read it, it doesn't deserve even a glimpse of a star. I read about a hundred pages of this book because it came so highly recommended, but I wished that I hadn't even read those. I was mostly offended by the graphic violence in those 100 pages. I'm for a book burning.
